[Nation Online] 10 Apr 2007--Two factions of the Lake Malawi Diocese of the Anglican Church in Nkhotakota clashed in church on Palm Sunday following a delayed service by one of the groups, forcing police to intervene, The Nation has learnt.

The church’s secretary, Michael Saimon, confirmed the incident yesterday. He said the matter was just a continuation of the unresolved leadership wrangle that has seen church members dividing into two groups and congregating separately for a year.

These misunderstandings, according to Saimon, started last year following the rejection of British reverend Paul Henderson who was accused of supporting gay movements and, therefore, not morally upright to be the diocese’s prelate.“

Sometime last year, the group that supports Henderson started congregating under a mango tree within the premises of the church. It was later resolved that the groups should worship in the church but at different times,” said Saimon.

He said the group that is anti-Henderson starts their service, which lasts about two hours, at 6.30 am after which the pro-Henderson faction takes over.
