Advent 2: He Is Coming for You

[The Church of Nigeria] 8 Dec 2007--The thought of Christ’s coming again is one that provokes different reactions among many people. For some, it is the promise of an end to the imperfections, unfulfillment, and the frustrations of this life. This makes the coming of Christ a time to look forward to, a kind of nostalgia for our heavenly home where we will be with the Lord forever. Paul describes the feeling in Romans 8:19-23: 23: For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are… All creation anticipates the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay… And even we Christians, although we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, also groan to be released from pain and suffering. We, too, wait anxiously for that day when God will give us our full rights as his children, including the new bodies he has promised us.

On the other hand, some dread it because, for them, it seems like an interruption of a good time out here. This is because they are either unprepared, or ignorant – not knowing what lies ahead and how that compares with what we have here. A great majority of people – even Christians – fall within this category. We think the best in life is to be found only in the here and now. For this reason, people go at fever-pitch through life, joining in the rat-race for the material comforts and socio-political benefits of our time. Surely, we must struggle for survival and enjoy the great opportunities of this life. The problem however is that, sometimes, biblical ethics are greatly compromised in the popular ‘end-justifies-the-means’ posture of our time.
