Christianity lies in the heart of Scripture

[Wichita Falls Times Record News] 6 Dec 2007--There’s an old story that the Bible was misplaced when county court came into session. Someone in the courtroom suggested a man who was present be called as a substitute for the Bible for the “swearing in” of witnesses because, it was said — an ordinary member of a local church of Christ — had memorized the entire Bible. He was said to be a “walking Bible.”

Many years ago, I was present at a Wednesday night service when the local minister of a large congregation asked for individuals to quote their favorite verse of Scripture. I wondered how many could quote any Scripture at all, but to my surprise, hands went up all over the audience of about a thousand people. Ushers with hand microphones began carried them to each in turn, and when the person quoted their passage of Scripture, no matter whether in the Old or New Testament, the minister would recite the passages before and after the one quoted.
