[EV News] 9 Feb 2008--The General Synod of the Church of England will begin its February Group of Sessions on Monday.
On Monday afternoon the House of Clergy and the House of Laity are meeting separately but one of the common items for discussion will be the Terms of Service Measure. The Laity are particularly concerned about the proposal to transfer four billion pounds of assets from local trusteeship to Diocesan trusteeship. It seems likely that this proposal will be defeated but has provided an effective smokescreen over the potentially far more far-reaching removal of clergy freehold. There are strong opinions held by some that what is proposed, Common Tenure, is nothing like Freehold whilst others argue there is little effective difference and most seem unclear. In fact it is likely that the impact of this change is going to take some time to become apparent, by which point the damage could well be done.
The business of the Synod proper will begin at 3.15pm including the Presidential Address. In view of Rowan Williams' recent absurd comments about Sharia law there is likely to be more interest in this than normal. Unfortunately he is unlikely to announce that he is stepping down.
God willing Church Society will provide coverage and analysis in our normal balanced and impartial way.
