Sudden shocking events usually have deep roots. The roots aren’t obvious in the immediate aftermath of the crisis when everyone is still figuring out what happened. The election of Donald Trump is no exception. How could a man whom a majority of the electorate saw as mentally, morally and temperamentally unfit to lead the country be elected president of the United States of America, with vast powers that could create national and international havoc?

Already the forces of normalization are turning the candidate into a president to whom deference is owed. Already Trump’s supporters are suggesting that all is well and are questioning the propriety of even asking for the meaning of his statements made in the course of the campaign.
