Church Armour: A Short Catechism for Young Churchmen, Chiefly on the Thirty-Nine Articles
Church Armour was written by the Rev. W. F. Taylor Vicar of St. Chrysostom’s, Everton, Liverpool, for use in schools in Liverpool in the late nineteenth century. Church Armour was intended to familiarize young people with the text of the Thirty-Nine Articles and to furnish them with answers in the words of the Church of England to important questions that were being raised at that time. Many of these questions are still being asked today.
Church Armour was published by the Church Association as Tract 59. The Church Association was one of the forebears of the Church Society, which has been described as the “senior evangelical body in the Church of England.” The Church Association was established “to defend the Church of England against ritualistic (Anglo Catholic) teaching which was making inroads into the Church.” The catechism is written in a clear, easy-to-understand style and offers churches and church schools a useful resource for instructing adults as well as young people in the doctrine and principles of the Thirty-Nine Articles. It is available in a downloadable PDF format.
