All Hallows Evening Prayer for Sunday Evening (July 12, 2020)

All Hallows Evening Prayer grew out of a perceived need for a service of praise, proclamation, and prayer for those who are unable to sing in their church or hear a choir or music ensemble in their church.

All Hallows Evening Prayer draws upon liturgical elements and music from a variety of traditions—Anglican, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, and Roman Catholic to name a few. It is ecumenical in its focus.

All Hallows Evening Prayer shows what a small church can do even with limited musical resources.

The order of service is taken from the Anglican Church of Canada’s The Book of Alternative Services (1985).

The paraphrase of the ancient lamp-lighting hymn Phos Hilaron, “O Laughing Light, O First Born of Creation,” is taken from the Anglican Church of Canada’s Common Praise (1998). The choral arrangement is by John Van Maanen.

The penitential psalm, Psalm 141, is Tony Alonso’s responsorial setting “Like Burning Incense, O Lord.” The variable psalm is Christopher Walker’s adaptation of Psalm 27, “The Lord Is My Light.” The first psalm prayer comes from the Lutheran Book of Worship Ministers Desk Edition (1983); the second psalm prayer from the Church of England’s Common Worship (2000).

The paraphrase of the Magnificat is taken from With One Voice: A Lutheran Resource for Worship (1995). The choral arrangement is by Ann Krentz.

The litany for the evening is taken from the Episcopal Church’s The Book of Common Prayer (1979). The Collect for Aid against Perils comes from Common Worship (2000).

The dismissal hymn, “We Praise You, Father, for Your Gifts,” is taken from Common Praise (1998). It also appears in GIA’s Hymnal for the Hours (1989) and other hymnals and music collections.
