I just posted All Hallows Evening Prayer for Wednesday Evening (July 22, 2020).

The service begins with an instrumental prelude – an arrangement of the native Dakota hymn tune LAC QUI PARLE for violin, cello, harp, and flute. Lac qui Parle is French for the “lake that speaks.” It is a lake in Minnesota so named after the cries of the ducks, geese, and other waterfowl that visit the lake each year.

The Phos hilaron is David von Kampen’s a cappella choral arrangement of the Lutheran Book of Worship’s translation of the ancient lamp-lighting hymn, “Joyous Light of Glory.”

The penitential evening Psalm is Tony Alonso’s responsorial setting of Psalm 141, “Like Burning Incense, O Lord.”

The psalm prayer is taken from the Lutheran Book of Worship Ministers Desk Edition.

The variable psalm is William Ferris’ responsorial setting of Psalm 8, “O Lord, Our God, How Wonderful Your Name in All the Earth!”

The psalm prayer is taken from the Church of England’s Common Worship.

The reading is Amos 5:8.

The homily is titled “Star Gazing” and is a reflection on how the stars in the heavens are a witness to God’s love for us.

The gospel canticle is Sr. Anne Carter’s paraphrase of the Magnificat, “My Soul Proclaims the Lord My God,” sung to the American folk hymn tune NEW BRITAIN.

The intercessions are taken from Praise God in Song: Ecumenical Daily Prayer.

The dismissal hymn is the Dakota hymn, “Many and Great, O God, Are Thy Things,” sung to the native Dakota melody, LAC QUI PARLE.
