The Third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete is the Latin word for rejoice. It anticipates the joy of the Christmas Season. Three candles may be lit on the Advent wreath or candleholder. If the Advent wreath or candleholder has a pink or rose-colored candle, it is lit on this Sunday. The Advent Season, the season of waiting and preparation, ends on Christmas Eve and the Christmas Season, the season of joyful celebration of our Savior’s birth, begins—not one quickly passing day of celebration but twelve days and nights of rejoicing.
The order of service for Sunday evening is taken from the Anglican Church of Canada’s The Book of Alternative Services (1985) and was chosen for its brevity, simplicity, and adaptability to online use.
The Scripture reading for Sunday evening’s service is Matthew 25: 31-46.
The title of the homily for Sunday evening’s service is "A Love That Goes Beyond Those Who Love Us."
