All Hallows Evening Prayer is a service of worship in the evening for all pilgrims on the journey to the heavenly city.
In the old liturgical calendar this Sunday is Passion Sunday and begins the season of Passiontide. One of the passion narratives was read on this Sunday, a week before Palm Sunday which celebrated Jesus’ triumphant entry in Jerusalem before his suffering and death on the cross. The new liturgical calendar combined Passion Sunday and Palm Sunday into one Sunday and restored a more logical order to the sequence of events commemorated in Lent and Holy Week. A primary reason for the new liturgical calendar was to recover the church’s ancient practice of instructing new believers in the teaching of Jesus and the life and ministry of a Christian before their baptism at the Great Vigil of Easter. Lent and Holy Week formed the last part of their three-year preparation.
The Scripture reading for this Sunday evening is Philippians 2: 12-18 Shining as Lights in the World.
The homily is titled, “One, Little Word.”
