Did you know the expression, “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” originated in a newspaper article in a Nashville newspaper poking fun at an inventor who claimed that he had constructed a working perpetual motion machine? The newspaper suggested that the inventor should next try to cross the Cumberland River by pulling himself up his bootstraps and flying across the river.
Of course, it is impossible to pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Yet people keep insisting that it is possible to do so.
While people like to claim that they got where they are solely by their own efforts, at some point in their life someone gave them a break. Someone gave them a helping hand.
The Scripture reading for this Sunday is John 12: 1-8 Jesus Anointed at Bethany.
The homily is titled “The Most Important Resource of All.”
