All Hallows Evening Prayer for Wednesday Evening (June 9, 2021) Is Now Online

All Hallows Evening Prayer is a service of worship in the evening for all pilgrims on the journey to the heavenly city.

Jesus often taught in parables—simple stories that illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson. Where we may have difficulty in understanding Jesus’ parables is that the illustrations which Jesus uses, while they may have been a part of the common experience of those who gathered to hear him, are no longer a part of our own common experience. They may assume knowledge on our part, which we do not possess.

In today’s reading Jesus tells the parable of the growing seed. The seeds in the parable were most likely wheat or barley, the two cereals grown in Judaea and the ancient Mid East in the time of Jesus’ earthly ministry. Both cereals were ground in a coarse flour and baked into bread or pounded in a mortar and then boiled to make a thick porridge. They were a staple in the diet of the peoples of the ancient Mid East. In Egypt and some other ancient Mid East countries they were also brewed into beer.

The Scripture reading for this Wednesday evening is Mark 4: 26-29 The Parable of the Growing Seed. .

The homily is titled “The Garden Is Not Ours But God’s.”
