The two-odd years that I was involved in a new church plant in Waldheim, Louisiana changed my perceptions of men's ministry. In the previous churches in which I had been involved, men's ministry was typically confined to ushering, preparing a monthly pancake breakfast, and hosting an annual barbecue or fish fry. At Hope Church men were encouraged to participate in group Bible studies related to their role as husband, father, employer, employee, and member of the community and to take an active role in the worship, life, and ministry of the church. They were also encouraged to serve the community in various ways, for example, they did maintenance and repairs to the homes of senior citizens in the community and hosted recreational opportunities for children in the community.
