I speak with many people who are trying to help a friend whom they suspect is in an abusive marriage. Many are uncertain about the extent of the problem, but they fear for their friend and want to help.

As a retired child welfare case worker whose caseload included child abuse cases in which the perpetrator was also abusing the mother, my advice is to get professionals who have experience with domestic abuse cases involved as soon as is humanly possible. This includes seeking their advice on how best to help the victim.
