All Hallows Evening Prayer for Saturday Evening (May 8, 2021) Is Now Online

All Hallows Evening Prayer is a service of worship in the evening for all pilgrims on the journey to the heavenly city.

Today’s reading has a surprise or two. “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.”

What was Paul thinking when he said these words?

Paul was quoting Proverbs 25: 21-22. It is a long-forgotten idiomatic expression. We have no idea what it means.

Of one thing we can be certain. Paul was not contradicting what he said earlier. He goes on to explain, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Paul is not talking about responding in kind to someone who was hateful or unkind to us. Rather the love and kindness shown in our response may put them to shame.

The Scripture reading for this Saturday evening is Romans 12: 9-21 The Marks of a True Christian.

The homily is titled “The Good Way.”
