All Hallows Evening Prayer for Wednesday Evening (May 12, 2021) Is Now Online.

All Hallows Evening Prayer is a service of worship in the evening for all pilgrims on the journey to the heavenly city.

The phrase “first born of creation” in today’s reading has been the cause of confusion in the Christian Church, leading to the belief that Paul taught that Jesus “was a divine being begotten by God the Father before the creation of the world, made him a medium through whom everything else was created, and that the Son of God is subordinate to God the Father.” This was the view held by the Arians in the third and fourth centuries AD and has its adherents today.

However, an examination of Paul’s other writings shows that he believed that the Father and the Son were co-eternal, that Jesus had always existed. Jesus was truly man and truly God. His divinity was not on loan so to speak from God.

The Scripture reading for this Wednesday evening is Colossians 1: 15-23 The Supremacy of Christ.

The homily is titled “Son of Man, Son of God”

The hymn of the day is Elaine Hagenberg’s arrangement of Martin Luther’s hymn, “All Praise to Thee, Eternal God,” for SATB choir and piano and optional string quartet. While the anthem was arranged for Christmas, it is “suitable beyond the Christmas season at any time the perfect plan of salvation is being celebrated.”

The anthem is available from Elaine Hagenberg Music: https://www.elainehagenberg.com/all-praise-to-thee-satb
