All Hallows Evening Prayer is a service of worship in the evening for all pilgrims on the journey to the heavenly city.
The late Sam Shoemaker, an Episcopal priest and a founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, challenged young people to try this experiment: Read one of the gospels and then live your life for 30 days as if everything in that particular gospel was true. He also challenged them to follow Jesus as much as they understood him. Shoemaker believed that the more we live into our current understanding of Jesus, the deeper our understanding of him would grow. As we grew in our understanding of Jesus, we should live into our growing understanding of Jesus.
As we endeavor to follow Jesus as we understand him, our desire to understand him more grows. We open our hearts and minds to the Holy Spirit and to God’s grace working invisibly in us. The Holy Spirit helps us to understand Jesus more and God’s grace enables us to live into our deepeniing understanding.
Jesus himself challenges us to grow in our understanding of him with these words, “Who do you say I am?”
The reading appointed for this Sunday evening’ service is Mark 8: 27-38 Jesus' Question and Peter’s Answer.
