All Hallows Evening Prayer for Ash Wednesday (February 17, 2021) Is Now Online

All Hallows Evening Prayer is a service of worship in the evening for all pilgrims on the journey to the heavenly city.

With this Wednesday evening’s service, we mark the beginning of the holy season of Lent, forty days dedicated to prayer and spiritual growth and renewal and leading up to Easter Sunday and the most important festival of the Christian year, the Feast of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Scripture reading for this Wednesday evening is 1 Peter 2: 1-10 The Living Stone and a Chosen People.

The homily is titled, “Spiritual Sacrifices.” The homily delves into what means to be “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people.”

The service blends three traditional pieces, Louise Bourgeois’ “O Gladsome Light O Grace,” Thomas Armstrong and Robert Philip Goodenough’s Psalm 141, and Thomas Talley’s Magnificat with two more recent pieces, Carl F. Schalk’s “Out of the Depths” and Karen Schneider Kinner and Steven C. Warner’s “Come to the Living Stone.” “Out of the Depths” is available from Concordia Publishing Company and J W Pepper; “Come to the Living Stone,” from GIA Publications.
